1. TRENDS Interview with Vivian Hisey, Program Manager, NMID Symposium

TRENDS has had the opportunity to catch up with and speak to a very busy Vivian Hisey, Program Manager for the 4th Annual New Media Instructional Design Symposium (NMID) http://www.influent.com/nmid2000, concerning some of the unique learning opportunities offered at the Symposium. Vivian, a practicing Instructional Designer, has put together an invigorating program.

TRENDS: What can we expect from this year's New Media Instructional Design Symposium?

HISEY: This year's NMID will focus on challenging the status quo with discussions and templates on how to do things differently. There are a high percentage of real life cases that will talk about both the successes and the failures of implementation using new technology - lots of lessons to be learned! We will also focus on providing information, tips, and tools that can be applied immediately. The NMID presenters have wide range of experience - from design and technology to advertising. There will be plenty of opportunities which each attendee can take advantage of to apply solutions to individual situations. There's something for everyone.

TRENDS: What are some of the new ideas and approaches which the faculty will be presenting?

HISEY: One of the main ideas will be eliminating or changing the old world design process to accommodate new approaches to learning and the need for decreased design and development time, such as:

* Using templates
* Using advertising principles and games in technology-based learning design
* Using blended solutions to enhance learning success
* Changing the role of the designer from just a "design expert" to a design expert, technology expert, salesperson, and graphic designer- all in one.

TRENDS: The program has some really great keynotes! Can you give us av quick peek into the messages they will be delivering?

HISEY: Allison Rossett will be speaking on how the Web and instructional design work together to combine a "big tent" for learning and performance. She'll define the "big tent" and the role of the Web in it; the implications of performance and decision support; and the future of design services, products, and careers.

Michael Gelb will share the keys to Leonardo DaVinci's varied intelligence and how to apply the DaVinci approach to learning to enhance the creative design requirements in an individual's personal and professional life. His keynote includes an interactive session that will help attendees practice applying the methods of his thinking.

Dr. Michael W. Allen will show how to avoid becoming an instructional design zombie! He'll throw "stones and tomatoes" at much of the published wisdom and false conclusions upon which many instructional design guidelines are based. He will show how to put research foundations in their place, and how to adopt new values and procedures that are realistic, successful, and fun.

TRENDS: What are some Symposium special features?

HISEY: Here are just a few:

1) A "Rap and Wrap-up" session: rather than just returning to their rooms at the end of the day, attendees will have an opportunity to highlight key ideas and consolidate the information gained in the first day by asking questions in a general session with all other attendees and faculty. 2) A general session for all attendees to clarify and define "multiple intelligences," and how to meet the demands of each "intelligence." They'll identify their own "intelligence" type, and then work with others to determine creative and innovative ideas for reaching each type through new media.

3) Pre- and post- workshops will be offered to give participants the time to concentrate on specific topics that will help them improve their instructional design skills and knowledge.

4) A reception on the first night will provide an organized networking opportunity to meet other attendees and faculty.
